SSHS-WIG Wrist Dissection Course 21/5/05

  View Printable Version
Wrist Interest GroupThe wrist dissection course was held on the morning of 21 May 2005 at the National University Hospital S.T.A.R. laboratory. This is the 2nd consecutive year that this course has been organized jointly by both the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery and the Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery, National University Hospital.

W.I.G. Chairman, Dr Looi KP who was also the course director, opened the course with an informative lecture on the anatomy and biomechanics of the wrist. The highlight of the course was the presentation on MRI imaging of the wrist by Dr Ian Tsou, who is also consultant radiologist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. High resolution state-of-the-art images of the wrist depicting clear anatomical and pathological features were demonstrated.

Due to the constraints of limited cadavers and resources, the course was fully subscribed with 12 enthusiastic participants attending. The teaching faculty, which comprised of Drs Aymeric Lim, Peng Yeong Pin, Winston Chew and Yong Fok Chuan was ever ready to offer their help. Some of the memorable moments included the demonstration of dynamic scapho-lunate dissociation and mid-carpal instability on the fluoroscopy and techniques of scapho-lunate reconstruction.

Due to the good response and feedback, we hope to make this course an annual event for the benefit of all hand surgeons in Singapore.

COMING SOON - The SSHS-WIG Wrist Dissection Course - 21 May 2005

Wrist Interest GroupUPDATE

The course will be held at the STAR lab at NUH from 08:30am to 12:30am. There are 12 places available. Onsite registration of $10 is required.
The instructors are Dr Looi KP, Winston Chew, Peng YP, Aymeric Lim, Ian Tsou. Lectures will start at 08:30am and cover biomechanics, anatomy and imaging followed by a cadaveric dissection.

"The wrist is the backbone of the hand". It is the stable base without which all useful hand function would be impossible. It is also the source of chronic pain, due to its complex anatomy and biomechanics.

Anyone interested in treating wrist problems must first understand the complex anatomy of the wrist. There is no better way to do this than to perform an anatomical dissection to expose and see the structures and their relationships to each other first hand. The SSHS Wrist Interest Group is proud to present a half day cadaveric wrist dissection course, instructed by Singapore's eminent wrist experts.

For a measly $10, this is your chance to learn about the various surgical exposures to the wrist, the anatomy of those troublesome ligaments and carpal bones, and perhaps gain some appreciation of the complexity of carpal anatomy and mechanics.

Watch out for this exciting event in May. Full details will be made available soon.
