The theme for this year's Review Course is "What's New in Hand Surgery". In keeping with this theme, we have put together a symposium to cover exciting developments in the field. There will also be a comprehensive programme covering the scope of Hand, Wrist and Microvascular Surgery. The course will benefit surgical trainees, especially those interested in Hand Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery. This course is also relevant to Occupational Therapists and Nurses whose work involves the care of Hand, Wrist and Microvascular patients. We are privileged to have Professor Duncan Angus McGrouther from the United Kingdom as part of our teaching faculty. He is a world renowned and vastly experienced surgeon with exciting research in Tissue Engineering. We invite you to share in the knowledge and experience of Professor McGrouther and the rest of the faculty. We also invite you to share your experience through discussion and participation in our Annual Scientific Meeting.

Tan Tock Seng Hospital starts a new Hand Surgery Unit in the Dept of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2009, having secured the services of A/Prof Teoh Lam Chuan and Dr Yong Fok Chuan, who will be sadly missed at SGH. They will join Dr Winston Chew and Dr Tan Puay Ling in what looks set to be a very strong and exciting team.
Here is the first series of lectures in their educational programme. We look forward to seeing more!

A/Prof Lim Beng Hai and Dr Tan Soo Heong attended the 37th Annual Kleinert Reunion Dinner on Friday, September 19, 2008. This was held during the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in windy Chicago from 18 to 20 September 2008. This Reunion was special because it marked the retirement of Dr Harold Kleinert from active practice. Dr Harold Kleinert and the Christine M Kleinert Institute have been instrumental in training several Hand Surgeons in Singapore. In recognition of his important contributions, he was made an Honorary Member of the SSHS in 2003.
Members who were trained there viz. A/Prof Teoh Lam Chuan, A/Prof Lim Beng Hai, Dr Winston Chew, Dr Tan Soo Heong and Dr Peng Yong Pin contributed to the festivities to honour Dr Kleinert by commissioning a sculptured bust of Dr Kleinert by Chern Lian Shan, a prominent sculptor in Singapore. This was presented to him during the dinner at Harry Caray's.
Dr Teoh Lam Chuan has penned a few heartfelt words in gratitude to Dr Kleinert, reproduced below without alteration:
"Dear Dr Kleinert,
I have difficulty finding words to say to you.
For words can carry only superficial flatteries. It is in silence that hides the truth.
It is in the quiet reflection that I feel the deep gratitude to you and your institution for giving hand surgery to the world and in particular, Singapore.
For me it is hand surgery that has molded by character, established my career, enjoyed international friendship, raised my family, enriched my life and now, riding towards retirement and happiness.
The society's AGM was held today from 10 am to 12 noon at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. This was followed by an informal Thai Buffet lunch at the hotel's Cafe Brio. One major highlight of the AGM was the introduction of the new members. Our new ordinary members for 2008 are: Darryl Chew, Yeo Chong Jin, Aaron Gan, Anthony Foo and Phoon Ee San. Pramod Chinder from Bangalore India joined as a new corresponding member. The executive committee for 2008-2009 was also elected. A/Prof Aymeric Lim and Peng Yeong Pin will remain as president and vice-president respectively.
