There was no cross-hospital teaching in May 2009 due to government-imposed restrictions on inter-hospital visits by doctors in reaction to swine flu / H1N1. In case people elsewhere in the world are wondering how many cases we had here: there were NO cases ever reported in Singapore during this period, nor are there any yet, thanks no doubt to measures such as these. Yes, it is safe to visit and attend the lectures!
The teaching programme is back on again (for now):

Many thanks to Andrew Chin for contributing this report on Prof McGrouther's recent visit.
Report on HMDP visitor in Hand Surgery
The Department of Hand Surgery, Singapore General Hospital was honoured to host Prof Duncan Angus McGrouther as the Ministry of Health HMDP expert visitor in Hand Surgery for FY 2008/9. Prof McGrouther was in town from 3 January 2009 to17 January 2009.
Prof McGrouther hails from the University of Manchester where he holds the Chair for Plastic Surgery. He is also a consultant Plastic and Hand Surgeon at the Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester, UK. He has been practising Hand Surgery for more than 30 years. Previously, he was also consultant at the Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow and also at the University College Hospital in London. He is also an authority on Tissue Engineering and has been at the forefront of the development and progress in this exciting field.
The 2-week programme was jam-packed with hours of lectures on broad topics of functional and dynamic anatomy of the hand, basic science concepts, principles of microsurgery, tendon surgery and management of complex hand cases. A 1-day hand anatomy dissection course was also factored in where his wealth of experience as anatomy demonstrator was duly tapped by all the young surgeons present who aspire to learn as much as possible from the master himself. He was also involved in live surgery.
Besides the core programme, there were also novel sessions on journal/paper critique, tips on handling fine surgical instruments using oranges as surgical subjects and also mock examination vivas for those trainees who were preparing for their final clinical examination. Visits were also made to various hospitals who kindly hosted him so as to facilitate closer interaction, exchanges of experiences and ideas among the clinicians and scientists
Prof McGrouther was also the keynote speaker for the Annual Hand Review Course and Scientific Meeting, organized by the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery, held from 16 to 17 January 2009 where he shared his insights and experience in tissue engineering.
The Hand Surgery community has certainly benefited from Prof McGrouther’s visit to Singapore. The strong ties forged and experiences shared will certainly foster closer co-operation between professionals of the two countries in the fields of Hand Surgery and Tissue Engineering.
The meeting was held at the Advanced Surgical Training Center, National University Hospital today. It was preceded by a buffet lunch in the foyer. A new executive committee was elected into office as well. The society would like to record thanks to A/Prof Aymeric Lim and his team for their efforts the last two years. We wish the new office bearers, lead by Dr Peng Yeong Pin, all the best.
